Fragments

Small observations, work-in-progress notes, and compact frameworks. Think of these as sparks rather than full treatises.

Definition Debt

The cost of a missing definition is paid later, with interest. When a term stays fuzzy, it starts doing double duty. It becomes both a label and an argument, both a description and a verdict. People begin to nod at the same word while holding different meanings in their heads. The conversation feels aligned until the first decision appears. Then the disagreement arrives, not because anyone changed their mind, but because no one was ever talking about the same thing. A definition is not a constraint on thought, it is a tool for shared precision.

Mirror Models

Sometimes a model is not a map of reality but a mirror of the modeler. It reflects the variables we care about, the things we are trained to see, the problems we want to solve. The model might be elegant, even accurate in narrow slices, and still fail to explain the system at hand. This is not a moral failure, it is a reminder. When a model feels too clean, ask what it was never built to notice.

Complexity vs Complication

Complication is many parts. Complexity is many parts that change each other. A complicated system can be disassembled and rebuilt. A complex system can be disassembled and then reassembled into something new. The difference matters when you try to fix things. If you treat complexity like complication, you will pull it apart and lose the behavior you came to understand.

The Smallest Surprise

Every system has a smallest unit that can still surprise you. For a market, it might be a single buyer changing her mind. For an institution, it might be a memo interpreted differently than intended. The size of that unit tells you something about the system's sensitivity. If the smallest surprise is still large, you are dealing with brittle coordination. If it is small, the system might be more adaptable than it appears.

Error Bars

Error bars are a form of humility you can measure. They are a confession that reality is not crisp, that the world cannot be nailed to a single number. When error bars disappear, it often means the uncertainty did not vanish, only the honesty did. A good model is not the one with the narrowest range, it is the one that tells you what the range actually is.

Blurred Causality

Language can hide causality. Words like "leads to" or "drives" often erase the chain between cause and effect. The chain matters because it is where the levers live. If you cannot name the links, you cannot test the links. A vague arrow is not an explanation. It is a placeholder for work that still needs to be done.
